A little History

Our Club was incorporated in 1994, having been started by a couple of local people and an arrangement between All Saints Catholic Boys and the council, who built the boatshed to nurture the aims of the Chipping Norton Lake Authority.
The lake was developed as a passive recreation waterway and the Club’s aims fit the bill perfectly.
We currently lease the ground floor of the Lakes Boatshed from which we promote a community-based activity of sailing. With the assistance of grant money we have purchased some junior boats, suitable for 8 - 12 year old members.
The 8 puffin pacers used by the club and hired to capable sailors were recently purchased from All Saints as they no longer have sailing as a current sport.
All these boats are maintained and insured for use on the water. We also have a few Access Dinghies available for less mobile sailors.

Learn to Sail Training and practice sessions are organised from November to April. We are an AYF approved training centre with approval to train to TL1 (dinghy & catamaran sailing) and TL3 (powerboat - including rescue boat endorsement). This training is carried out through voluntary work of the members.
We are an affiliated club, which races under ISAF Rules and use a set of sailing instructions setting out local conditions. We welcome any class of the beach boats, including catamarans and small trailer sailors in open and handicap racing.

The Yacht Racing

We conduct about 40 Saturday races per year, split into 1short and 1 long series with breaks in July-August and December-January. Racing commences around 3 pm during Daylight saving and 2pm non daylight saving and concludes with a BBQ and social conversation usually consists of events seen or heard about on and off the water.
Trophies are awarded to the winning skippers and also to the winning crews under a separate pointscore system at the end of each series.
A Club Championship series for NS14, Pacers and Singlehanders is conducted in the warmer months between September and April.
In past years we have acted as a host for other Sailing Class Associations race days such as Tasars, NS14, Manly Juniors and 18 Footers and most recently EC12 Model Yachts.
We conduct a special Come Try Sail day once a year in association with the Boating Industry Association in November. All our members voluntary give of their time so the general public are able to experience the fun of sailing.

Model Yachting

Around August in 2004 we were approached by a couple of model yachtsmen looking for a new venue to sail at,they were very impressed with Chipping Norton Lake and had realistically evaluated it's enormous potential.
After a couple of trial sail days with us the Club Exec decided to bring them on board as full club members in a sub group to be known as Twinbeach Modellers.
Stan Allen and Bob Jones were those 2 keen model yachtsmen, with Stan being appointed as the Co-ordinator on the Club Committee.
Stan and Bob brought some others along and quickly got ourselves established as a model yachting venue by hosting the East Coast 12 Metre 2005 State Championships in March of the following year.
Though the modeller ranks were thin and not yet sufficient to run a progressive pointscore championship, they kept to their sailing schedule, holding a winner takes all championship regatta in July, won by Kerry Gibson.

Stan and Bob are keenly developing a new class of model yacht, called Au Maxi's,scale models of full size Maxi's with a maximum LOA of 2.0 metres.Stan has been evaluating his 1.7 metre model of the older 78 ft Nicorette while constructing a 2.0 metre model of the 2004 Sydney/Hobart winning 90 ft Nicorette Maxi,Bob recently launching his 1.7 metre model of the older Nicorette.

Dinghy sailor and past Commodore Clance Denman joined the modellers with an EC 12 and set about the task of relearning how to sail while standing on shore and not on the boat.

In March 2006,the club once again hosted the EC 12 State Champs, this time running the event with regular dinghy sailing members performing all the official duties.
Clance's son Chris joined the modellers ranks, and sailing Stan's EC 12,both competed in the regatta. With near perfect sailing conditions for this particular class of model yacht, the lake really showed herself as an ideal venue for model yachting.

As we all grow older and unfortunately realise that climbing onboard a dinghy to go sailing may be getting harder and harder, model yacht sailing is a great way of maintaining the enjoyment of sailing, plus also passing on experiences and knowledge gained over the years.

Just ask Clance, the skills, the tactics, and the rules, are exactly the same, but it is very much a different experience and learning curve - and you don't get wet.

Stan on the other hand, has gone the opposite way, taking all opportunities to learn how to sail dinghy's.
Not being content to start out on something 'easy',and with no formal training,he's learning the fine art of skippering an NS 14.
With his complex and technical development of the Maxi models,he's expanding his knowledge and combining the skills of the two sailing disciplines.
