Race reports 29/3! Posted by W Loder at: 20.00 on Apr 30 2012

Another good turnout of 12 boats for the second winter series, unfortunately the breeze didn't really turn up so it was pretty slow going out there most of the time!!

Dave Harley broke the start and lost some time restarting - correctly this time after last weeks indiscretions by some other sailors! From there it was a bit of a lottery as the breeze was quite variable, there wasn't much between the first 6 boats at the first mark and it wasn't just NS14s up front, Jim Ley had his Finn running well and the other open boats were nearby - even Brett Jones and Cassie in a Pacer were up trading spots with most of us.

Jim, David Cox and Justin Wright were fighting out the lead with each taking the lead at various points. Annette had the club Laser out and was doing real well against the rest of us, we would all bunch up and then she seemed to catch just a little more breeze and pull away again. Half way through the second lap she turned the mark with Brett just behind, I was a little behind with Dave Harley and Dave Humble - well the breeze deserted us and Dave Harley was stranded there for a few minutes and was never able to recover.

The straggling pacers run by Peter Gardiner and Ian Marks were finished at the end of 2 laps along with Paula and Phil in Nicorette, the rest of the field continued on to complete 3 or 4 laps depending on category. Jim and Annette elected to carry on and complete the 4 laps, so we had some close finishes with me finishing next in Jolly Roger only 25 seconds ahead of Brett and Cassie, with Dave Humble only 30 seconds further back. Dave Harley brought Stealth in 2 minutes later and Max Hubbard in I'll Be Blowed a further minute back.

It was then the faster boats finishing 4 laps to come home and Jim in Buckets prevailed to hold off David Cox in Rhapsody by a minute, Justin had Casper leading at the end of the third lap but then faded badly in the last lap to be almost 5 minutes behind David and then Annette in Clubba finished 2 minutes further back.

So it was pretty frustrating at times and a good test of skill and luck. Brett and Cassie showed everyone up to take out both handicap and yardstick - been some time since anything other then a NS14 has won yardstick - and I can't remember a Pacer ever managing to do it! I'm betting Cassie puts it down to the sparkle sunscreen for the good result!!

Next week is the third race of winter series with Russell and Glen Bonfield down as start crew.

Race reports 21/3! Posted by W Loder at: 20.00 on Apr 30 2012

It was the first race of the winter series on Saturday and we had good weather, light winds (but a lot more then the wee before!!) and a fleet of 15 boats, a great turnout! Annette came along and nicked the club laser before me so I was relegated to a Pacer, battling it out with Jarod with Ian as crew, Bruce Miller and Brett Jones with Cassy as crew. I got the go fast tip from Cassy  - sparkle sunscreen - so I put it to the test!

The race was started with a real bunched group due to the light winds, and we had the signal that someone broke the start, and Rod in Jolly Roger played it safe returning to the start line. It was very close to the first mark but there were a few standouts with Peter Gardiner and Annette mixing it up with the lead NS14s. Peter Spicer in No Mad was clear out front with Russell not too far behind and they remained there the whole race. Back behind them was where the action really was, Justin and Adam were having a see-saw battle and just behind them Annette, Peter Dave Harley, Max Clinch and Rod were really close with never more then 4 minutes between them. Max Hubbard was a little slower but certainly showing good speed compared to the Pacers. Paula and Phil were out again after their good effort in the drifter the previous week, however Paula strained a muscle again in the first lap and they retired at that point.

Cassys' speed hint was working well, Brett and Cassy showed the rest of us how to do it beating us home by nearly 10 minutes. Bruce and I in single handed Pacers were having a great battle changing postion several times till the last lap when I made a bit of a break and able to maintain it to the end with Jarod and Ian coming in last.

So we had a number of open boats kick on and complete the full 4 laps that the NS14s were doing and so Peter Gardiner was the first boat home followed by Peter Spicer, Brett Jones, Russell then Max Hubbard. Next home was me with Adam just pipping Bruce on the last leg, then Justin and Max Clinch just behind him with Annette, Dave Harley and Jarod coming home real close. Rod was the last boat back a couple of minutes later.

After the race there was a final twist, Rod and Annette were both disqualified as they had both broken the start - Rod had returned to the line but not rounded the limit mark so not actually correctly restarted and Annette had risked it was only Rod who had broken. This was pretty disappointing as they had both sailed really well, however rules are rules and I'm sure they'll be more cautious in future starts!

Next week is the second winter series race and start crew is Rod & Adam. Hopefully the winds are a little kinder and we have a good turnout again.

State Championships Posted by D Humble at: 20.00 on Apr 30 2012

Over the Easter Weekend the NS14 State Championships were held in Sydney with a number of the club NS14s making the short trek to the other end of the Georges River for the Regatta.  A  Writeup of the event by SailWorld gives a flavour of the close racing over the weekend.  CNLSC regulars Adam Trickey and Phillip Williams won the Handicap Series - Well done to both of them

Race report 11/3! Posted by W Loder at: 20.00 on Mar 15th 2012

No report last week as I was hard at it laying tiles - but that looked better then heading to the lake with all the wet weather and light breeze!!

However there were apparently 5 brave (read mad!) sailors who contested the 5th leg of Single Hander & Laser championship.

This week the weather was somewhat better - I scored duty so wasn't out on the water, however we had a healthy fleet of 14 including 6 NS14s for 5th leg of their championship.

There was a good south to south-easterly blowing with some real challenging wind shifts apparent near the island. After the start the familiar spread of the fleet begain - however Dave Harley in Stealth seemed to get the best of it holding off Peter Spicer in No Mad for half a lap. Dave was looking to have a great race but did get caught by a few of the other NS14s by the finish. Jim Ley in his Finn kept up throughout finishing in a very creditable 4th spot. A bit of an upset was David Cox after having a fairly poor start getting in front of Russell.

However it was back in the field where most of the action was happening - It seemed everyone wanted to keep Ian in the Pacer company at the back of the field! Dave Humble came back to shore midway through the first lap having forgotten his lifejacket. Next lap he was in the drink so it was a good choice!! Rod got caught up on the bottom mark and then went in the drink with Dave. Graiden also had boat problems with his halyard coming loose and he returned to shore for some quick repairs before setting off after Ian again.

So in the end Cookie was first home at the end of his 4 laps, then Peter Spicer completing 5, then Max Hubbard, next was a flurry of finishers, David Cox, Russell Moore, Jim Ley, Justin & Annette, Dave Harley, Graiden, Dave Humble, Rod Boon, & Glen (only 5 & half minutes between them all). Ian was left to trail the field but ended first on handicap, so pretty good day out.

This Saturday is race 6 of the NS14 championship, Glen and Graiden are down for duty crew.

Race report 25/2! Posted by W Loder at: 20.00 on Feb 19th 2012

A small field 8 in attendance for the 5th Open/Pacer race with a lone Pacer taken out by Ian Marks - which makes it pretty quiet for him at the back of the field.

The wind was pretty good but had some gusts to catch the unwary - like myself - capsizing both before the race start and once during the race (luckily no-one was able to take advantage and get past me!).

Russell and Dave Harley in the NS14s took off from the rest of us with Jim Ley in his Finn not far behind them, and that's how the top 3 stayed throughout! Cookie and I in Lasers, Rod and Glen in the Banshees and Peter Gardiner in his Leader were all battling it out for the other positions. Cookie had the lead for the first lap and a half and I surprised myself catching him just before he pulled out. After Cookie pulled out I managed another uneventful lap before I got all out of shape approaching the mark when hit by some gusts and over I went, Rod was close by and very quick to suggest I had hit the mark!! Into the last leg home Peter was looking like he may close the gap but in the end I had enough lead and came through first home, however I saw Ian was up near the top mark and set off to see if I could catch him before he finished his third lap.

Peter came in a minute later and Glen just a minute behind him, Glen had Cookie fine tune some of his running gear and this seemed to be working pretty well, keeping pace with Peter and a little ahead of Rod - apart from capsizing in the last lap he may well have beaten them both - word from the point was he got the death wobbles on the downwind run and then went swimming!

Rod finished his 3rd lap a couple of minutes ahead of Russell on his 4th with Dave Harley only 90 secs behind, Jim was 6 minutes back - but he said it was his rubbish sail, so watch out when he has the better ones on!!

I got to lap Ian just after the bottom mark and got home for the second time a minute ahead of him.

Next week is the 5th leg of the Single Handed and Laser championship, 3pm start, duty crew is Justin & Annette - so see you there.

Liverpool Cup! Posted by D Humble at: 20.00 on Feb 19th 2012

Today saw 14 boats contest the Liverpool Cup. Two back to back races over 2 short laps were run with plenty of action on the water and even a number of upset results particularly among the open class boats.
The first race started with boats taking a couple of different lines, Justin and Annette in Casper had the best of it at the top mark with David close behind. Peter Spicer had a poor start and was well off the pace Max Clinch lead the open boats with some tight racing behind. I was doing pretty well in the club Laser and having a good run against Cookie in Pie & Peas, Graiden in Avatar and Max in I'll be Blowed. The second lap had Peter Spicer move up and take the lead from Justin, back in the field there were several place changes and the field spread out in the variable winds.
Peter Spicer was first home with Justin just 30 sec behind and David a further 2 mins back, Max Clinch a further 2 mins and then me holding off a fast finishing Cookie, Max Hubbard and Graiden. Then Adam in Bondi Tram with Dave Humble just behind, and Peter Gardiner back another couple of mins. Glen and Rod were battling it out in the Banshees and Ian Marks was last home in the lone Pacer - with crew this week as he convinced one of the trainees (Ashley) to race with him. At the end of the first race she was treated to a capsizing demonstration by Max Clinch, convenient as we had only done the practise today!
Second race was immediately following the first and was quite different with the more fancied boats getting better starts Peter Spicer pretty much led start to finish and Cookie was up not far fom Max Clinch. Again there was lots of jossling for position amongst us back in the pack. By the end the first 4 boats home were the same but Adam was next home followed by Cookie, Graiden me then Peter Gardiner. Dave Humble held off Max Hubbard and then there was Glen and Rod behind - just in reversed order this time! With Ian and Ashley finishing a fair way back.
So in the end after some massaging of the figures I plucked the winner as Justin and Annette in Casper ahead of Max Clinch in Posiedens Revenge and Max Hubbard - nice working of the handicap and some adjustments in order!!!
On Yardstick the winner was Peter Spicer & Cathy Cox on No Mad from Justin & Annette then David Cox.
Now some general admin. A revised Duty Roster list is on the notice board , please take note of when you are required. If unavailable for your rostered duty please organise a replacement or at least let me know so we can reorganise things a little. Also Dave Humble is working on the club website  so take a look and give him any comments or suggestions for improving it. Next week Adam and Chad have duty for the 5th leg of the Open and Pacer Championship, let's hope for some kind weather another great afternoon on the lake.

Quickest race report ever - no racing today!! Posted by D Humble at: 20.00 on Feb 13 th 2012

Due to thunderstorms and rain around the lake todays race has been called off - it will be resailed at the end of the current summer series which makes it April 14th (week after Easter). Duty crew will be same as today, Max Hubbard and Dave Humble. This will push the winter series back a little, so standby for some duty crew changes - they will be posted in the roster in the boatshed and also on the club website www.cnlsc.org.au Now next week is the Liverpool Cup, it is a handicap race open to all members. Normal start time of 3pm and will be consist of 2 or 3 short races sailed back to back (1 minute warning siren after last boat finishes and then a normal 5 minute countdown. Phil has offered to run the start so we can have maximum boats on the water, so if it has been a while drag out the boat dust off the cobwebs and get on down to the lake next Saturday! Cheers Wayne Loder Race Sec

2012 NS14 Single Handed Champs at Chipping Norton Lake SC Posted by D Humble at: 20.00 on Feb 6 th 2012

Well the 2012 NS14 Single Handed Championship has been run with a field of 12, including 6 visiting boats, and won this year by our own Russell Moore.
Light winds greeted everyone on Saturday and we delayed the start till some wind came in - around 2:30! Back to back races of 4 laps were scheduled however the first race was shortened to 3 laps - and not because Russell was winning!! 2nd and 3rd were filled by visitors and Peter Spicer in 4th. In the second race Peter almost managed to turn the tables on Russell but came in second with Russell finishing 4th, race was won by Graham Lee of Northbridge. Sunday was a repeat of Saturday - only more sun and less wind!! The start was rescheduled to 1:30pm with two 3 lap back to back races, of course the wind wouldn't co-operate and we postponed the race with boats on water untill 2:20 when we decided to start the race anyway - turned out to be a wise choice as the expected NE wind finally came in and stayed for the rest of the arvo. Peter Spicer and Chris Denman decided to sit this race out due to the light winds at the start. Last race saw Peter taking a good lead untill just after the first lap when he very uncharacteristically capsized and went from 1st to near last - especially taking time to try and find his sunglasses! However he did recover a little to come in 5th position. Chris also had a good run to finish off in 3rd position. Race was won by Alex Chittenden from Northbridge.
A big thanks to all those involved in helping to make the regatta successful - in particular Lynne for organising lunch, Clancy for having a second powerboat on the lake and Cookie for taking on race officer for the regatta - but also everyone else for helping launch /recover boats, manning the tender or helping on the point. Looks like we have built on last year, so let's look to keeping it going in future. Next week (12 Feb 2012) is another pointscore race , with the full range of classes participating , summer series 16 with the 4th NS14 round being sailed, 3pm start - hope to see you on the water.
Cheers
Wayne Loder

New Sprint Series great success Posted by S. Allen at: 2.00 pm on April 15 th 2010

The Sprint Series races held for the Liverpool Cup and the most recent Resail day on the 17 th April were fantastic.
We will always be up against the weather to be able to start the racing early enough to get at least 5 races in,and
the 17 th was no exception, though we still managed 4 races.

Wayne Loder being the winner on the day in very light shifting winds that challenged all skippers and crews.

We are planning to have as many Sprint Series races fitted into the season's schedule as we can without adding in
more race days.
The basic plan is to have them on 'unused' Resail days as we did on the 17 th,plus also for the 'Icebreaker Series'.
Ultimate aim is to introduce a Sprint Trophy or Shield for the racing season with the Lverpool Cup still a seperate
trophy but contributing to the overall season score, along with any other 'special races' using the same format.
The basic format will be as per the LC and the 17 th.

FORMAT for EST
11.00 AM race start.
Midday lunch-
1.00 PM race the afternoon out for as many races as possible.

Boat(s) crews will roster through start duty.
We all need to be at the Lake at least 1 hr before race start.
The first duty crew a bit earlier to set up the race course and get the paperwork sorted.

To all our new sailors.
This type of racing is the ideal format to hone your skills in a 'fun' environment.
To have multiple starts in pretty much the same conditions with the same fleet can do a lot to improve your confidence
and start/race tactics.
If you muck it up you don't have to wait another week to try to improve, you get another crack at it next race.

ALL GOOD FUN

CNLSC hosts Feb 2008 NS14 MT Posted by S. Allen at: 11.00 am on Feb 26 th 2008

On the grassy slopes of Grand Flanuer Beach at Chipping Norton Lake, skippers and crews prepare their NS14's for racing.
The MT is a Metropolitan Trophy, for which NS14's race at selected yacht clubs around the Sydney area throughout the year, this was our turn.
The current National Champion,'Tigger Too' skippered by Hugh tait from the Northbridge Yacht Club, showed his winning skills with a runaway win in squally shifting winds on our fantastic lake.
2 nd and 3 rd places were filled by our own 'Nomad' (Peter Spicer) and 'Rainbow Spirit' (Russell Moore).

2004 Nicorette R/C model finally sets sail Posted by S. Allen at: 11.00 pm on May 6th 2007

After 2 years in the build and many weeks waiting for the right light winds for her first sail plus some frustrating gear failures during sets up on the bank,Stan Allen's R/C model of the 2004 Sydney to Hobart winning Nicorette finally gets out on the water.
There's more info on her in the 'Twinbeach Modellers' pages under projects/Au,but basically, she's 2 metres long with 11 remote functions including a fully automatic functioning canting keel.

Now that she has successfully passed her first sailing test, the web pages will be further added to with more info on her details and how she was built.

Congratulations to Rhapsody Posted by S. Allen at: 7.00 am on April 12 th 2007

Congratulations to skipper David Cox and daughter Pip (crew) for their excellent 4 th place on handicap aboard Rhapsody.
Of the 6 CNLSC Ns14 teams that competed in the NSW NS14 State Champs at Toronto,Lake Macquarie over the 2007 Easter long weekend,Rhapsody was the only member yacht to finish all 6 races.
A strong 25+ knot squall blasted the 57 boat fleet during the first race, causing havoc and damage to our other 5 entrants,Rhapsody kept it all together and made it to the finish line.

Short Video clips added to gallery page Posted by S. Allen at: 11:00am on Feb 29 th 2007

As we are now taking video of our sailing activities on the lake,I thought it would be neat to include a short clip on the gallery page.
As I am limited with web hosting space, the clips have to be kept very short, about 2 mb in size and 20 secs duration.
I will also be adding similar clips for the model yachts and of course for Nicorette when she can finally hit the water.

I do intend to 'swap' clips around regularly, not have the same one playing all the time.

Twinbeach Modellers and CNLSC sites combined Posted by S. Allen at: 11:00am on Feb 29 th 2007

Both web sites are now combined into one.
The Twinbeach site is still there with only the front page and is automatically redirected to the CNLSC site in 5 secs.

I'm not all that satisfied with the menu's so any feedback would be much appreciated.

Twinbeach Modellers - sailing days changed Posted by S. Allen at: 1:00pm on Jan 29 th 2007

Starting from Feb 2007,the sailing days for the model yachts will change from 1st and 3 rd sundays of each month to the 2 nd and 4 th sundays of each month.
This was brought about by our mates at Sydney A's, sailing now at Penrith, having to switch around to suit the requirements of their new venue.
Also, the sailing calendars for both groups have now been combined into one on the CNLSC site and Twinbeach will be linked to it.
Another project in the pipe is to combine both web sites into one, saving both time and space.

Race Reports now coming on line on Results page Posted by S. Allen at: 1:00pm on June 26 th 2006

The first of the clubs competition race reports, which also includes race results, for the 24 th June has been posted on the RESULTS page.
Clicking the 'link' on the page for the resp date,as more are added, will take you directly to that report.
There is a 'RESULTS' link for the resp days on the CALENDAR that will also take you directly to that report.
A progressive pointscore table will be added very shortly and will most likely be placed at the very bottom of the page with a link at the top so as not to block the 'RESULTS' links.

Lynne was the 'backbone' of this report,in that she jotted down some pertinant notes for me as well as taking some photos with my camera, which she then emailed to me,including also the race sheet.

I ask for all members on start duty to follow Lynne's lead by taking brief race notes to help with the creation of race reports, can even write the full thing if you wish to be involved with the process.

Our next aim is to have these reports published each week in the newspaper.

Full size yachties help modellers for the 2006 EC 12 SC Posted by S. Allen at: 11:00pm on April 1 st 2006

The dinghy sailors put their regular sailing to another day to assist CNLSC-Twinbeach Modellers to run the East Coast 12 Metre State Champs on the weekend of 11 th and 12 th march 2006.
Apart from Frank Spittle (modeller) as RO on the saturday, all other official duties were performed by dinghy sailors, thus freeing up modellers normally involved, enabling them to compete.
Our Commodore Russell was there both days and served as RO on the sunday.Others who gave of their time were Lynne,Phil,Paula,Rod,Tina and Matt.
Lynne was again the behind the scenes player providing all with food and keeping the mobile fridge topped up to quench everyones thirsty throats.
Our lake played it's part with perfect weather and conditions for the model class showing once again to all the appreciative participants that the lake really is great for all forms of yachting.

CNLSC has top time at Parramatta Park. Posted by S. Allen at: 11:00pm on April 1 st 2006

Chipping Norton Lake Sailing Club and Twinbeach Modellers enjoyed a great day at Parramatta Park for the Australia Day display.
We had several model yachts there representing 3 classes,A class,EC 12,and the new Au maxi's.
Also on display was Chris Denman's NS 14.
Our main purpose for being there was to make more people aware of Yachting, specifically Model Yachting, rather than just trying to get some new members.
There were many thousands of people roaming the park and taking in all the displays and from the general conversations overhead,we were surprised at just how many were unaware that Model Yachting even existed.
More amazing was that many were also unaware that Chipping Norton had lakes and we sailed on them.
We have to therefore say that our mission was accomplished and we look foreward to doing the display again next year.

A new Web Site for CNLSC. Posted by S. Allen at: 11:00pm on April 1 st 2006

Chipping Norton Lake Sailing Club and it's members have been without a web site for some time after the loss of their host. As I was building a new web site for Twinbeach Modellers I figured I may as well do the main club site too.
Please report any difficulties to my personal email address shown at the bottom of this page,
or click this link--
EMAIL BUGS NOW --to send me a bug-report.I also welcome any comments about the site.

Ultimately this site will have as many features and information sources as time and space will permit.
I have a 10 mb limit to this particular web addy but have a further 4 x 10 mb spots available to link with as required and shared with the Twinbeach Modellers site,so I'll be keeping it as tight as possible.
