RACE REPORT Saturday 23.9.06

The first point score race of the 2006/2007 season presented the competitors with strong squalling NW winds,3 yachts returned to the beach deciding not to compete and for those that stayed out it was a wild ride around a large course.
There wasn't the usual close in battle for prime starting positions today as all skippers were giving each other a bit of water to manouver in.
Pie n'peas won the start just ahead of Rainbow Spirit with small margins back to Puffed out,No mad,Casper and the rest of the fleet.
Rainbow Spirit was quick to gather up Pie n'peas within about 50 metres as she took off for the top mark that was out of sight near the launching ramp.
Somewhere in there the skipper of Casper missed his kicking straps on a tack and fell overboard leaving his crew to ride out a capsize, quickly back up and still holding onto 4 th place to follow Rainbow Spirit still leading from No mad with Pie n'peas now in 3 rd.
As Rainbow Spirit completes the 1 st lap from No mad,Casper takes Pie n'peas about 80 metres out, followed by Puffed out,My Yot,I'll be blowed and the Jolly Roger.
The wind is easing slightly and the fleet is spreading out as the faster NS14's begin to lap the slower Pacers and other classes.
I'll be blowed is lapped by Rainbow Spirit right on the line for the 2 nd lap as the Pacers of John and Anthony complete their 1 st lap.
2 nd place is still No mad from Casper,Pie n'peas and Puffed out. Over at the beach buoy,Wait up (the Cat) and My yot capsize on the jibe watched closely by the crew of the tender boat.
As Rainbow Spirit heads in to complete her 3 rd lap, she laps 5th placed Puffed out as the wind continues to ease.
The field is now so far spread out that the only passing action is the lapping of slower yachts.
The wind then backs of a little more as it swings to almost due west and the NS14's sail on to complete 5 laps while the Pacers and other classes are all done at only 3 laps, with the finishing order unchanged over the final laps.

RACE REPORT Saturday 7.10.06

An awkward fine starting line for a normally favoured starboard start and a fleet of 12 boats.
All skippers were busy during pre-start and countdown sizing up the situation and jockeying for a good start with a few choosing to cross the pack with a port start.
Stan and Phil on Nan's Girl for the first time, after losing their ride on Bondi Tram, came around the back edge of the pack on port tack for a pretty good start with a bit of speed going for them in about 7 th or 8 th across the line.
Hypernuts got the jump at the line from No mad and Casper leaving a gaggle of boats all over each other at the outer mark.

By about 50 metres out with Hypernuts scooting away,Casper and Nan's girl slip by No mad for 2 nd and 3 rd resp.
Working the wind shifts to the top mark in the shadow of the island was a testing task and boats were spread all over.
Casper took 1 st mark honours followed by Hypernuts and Bondi tram, close on their transoms were No mad,Puffed out and I'll be blowed.
Nan's girl and a few Pacers had lost out badly in the wind shifts to be back a fair distance on this critical first leg.

By the 2 nd mark Casper had opened up over Hypernuts then No mad, with Puffed out and I'll be blowed right up there hanging onto the faster NS14's.
Bondi Tram close behind then Nan's girl and the bulk of the Pacers struggling to make up their 1 st leg losses.
Hypernuts had taken and pulled away from Casper for the 1 st lap lead then No mad from Bondi tram who'd taken I'll be blowed and Puffed out.
Meanwhile,Jolly Roger and Nan's girl were enjoying a good run together with other Pacers spread out behind them.
Nan's girl and Jolly Roger continued their close tussle throughout the 2 nd lap as the leaders maintained a close duel at the head of the fleet.

No mad finally took Casper during the 3 rd lap and set off after leader Hypernuts.
The 4 th lap began with No mad now in the lead by 1/2 a boatlength.
This lap was all down to wind shifts,Casper falls back with Hypernuts and No mad fighting for the lead,Casper then working hard to claw her way back.
Hypernuts goes through for the win,Casper comes on to grab 2 nd from No mad, then I'll be blowed and Puffed out.
Nan's girl heads up the rest and Bondi Tram is forced to retire with a broken tiller arm.

RACE REPORT Saturday 14.10.06

An horrendously hot spring day with searing hot NW winds had 2 boat crews deciding not to sail, conditions that would severely test the endurance of many boat crews.

9 boats in the pre-start area for a 'water start' under the command of the starter in the Start Boat, instead of the usual on shore start control.
Pie n'peas leads them out at the gun from Rainbow Spirit,Casper,Bondi tram and Finger lick'n good, with Hypernuts trailing by 2 boatlengths.
Casper snags her appendages on the Start Boat anchor line, getting free and executuing a penalty turn costs her plenty.
Hypernuts charges through in tricky winds to be up with Rainbow spirit to the 1st mark with Bondi tram then Finger lick'n good with Pie n'peas now pushed back to 5 th.
The skipper on Finger lick'n good misses his footing and falls overboard.
Across to the bay mark it's Rainbow spirit,Hypernuts,Bondi tram then Pie n'peas with Finger lick'n good recovering.
Up the lake from the bottom mark in a freshening NW,Rainbow spirit has opened up a 150 m gap to Hypernuts,200 m back to Casper,3 boatlengths to Bondi tram,a further 2 boatlengths to Finger lick'n good, then Pie n'peas,My yot and I'll be blowed from Jolly Roger.
The 1 st lap is done and the leaders are working the shifts again across the lake to the 1 st mark,Hypernuts has closed to 20m from Rainbow spirit,Bondi tram is past Casper into 3rd while Finger lick'n good has stalled badly to fall right out of touch.
2nd lap run to the line sees Hypernuts to within 5 secs of Rainbow spirit with Bondi tram 40 secs behind her.
Drifting again to the 1st mark,Rainbow spirit holds a narrow lead over Hypernuts and Finger lick'n good capsizes.
The wind swings to almost due North and strengthens,Rainbow spirit and Hypernuts storm the line for the close of the 3 rd lap with Bondi tram struggling to make up her deficit.
Close of the 4th lap and Hypernuts passes Rainbow spirit around the outside at the finish mark to take the lead with Bondi tram now closer by 10 secs.
5th lap and the fight for the lead continues as Rainbow spirit attempts to run down Hypernuts, gains buoy room at the finish mark to take back the lead with Bondi tram now right up there and in the fight.
As they streak across from the 1 st mark,Bondi tram takes 2nd place from Rainbow spirit who fights back to retake 2nd at the bottom mark then goes after Hypernuts on the run down the lake for the race finish.
This time Hypernuts holds the inside line and now has buoy room, swings hard around the finish buoy for the race win over Rainbow spirit by a mere 2 secs with Bondi tram crossing for 3rd.

The heat of the day shows on the faces of the crews as they return to shore, they are all totally wasted and a few with barely enough strength left to haul their boats out of the water.
A timely reminder to all of the dangers of dehydration and heat exhaustion.

RACE REPORT Saturday 21.10.06

In stark contrast to last saturdays horrendous and life threathening heat, today was very cold and overcast with moderate squally SW winds, creating shutes, holes and swirls all across the lake.

A tight race start with the majority of the fleet vieing for position at the outer mark with Rainbow spirit a little closer in,Nan's girl and Pie n'peas nearer the inner mark.
Pie n'peas and Nan's girl both broke the start and the wind died off as they attempted to restart.
The wind was still there out wider as Rainbow spirit took off followed closely by Nomad,Hypernuts and Jolly Roger.
Positions unchanged after the beat to the windward mark near the boatramp,Rainbow spirit,Nomad, Hypernuts,Casper,Rhapsody,Finger licking good,Pie n'peas and Never surrender with Nan's girl trailing well behind after her windless restart.
The 1 st lap belonged to Rainbow spirit then Nomad kicked into gear to challenge for the lead.
The intense battle between the 2 resulting in a contact with Nomad at fault and required to do a 720 turn to exonerate herself.
Hypernuts not close enough to take advantage of the situation,Nomad holds onto 2 nd place but allows Rainbow spirit to jump out to a 500m lead.
At the close of the 2nd lap,Rainbow spirit tries desperately to make the S/F gate without throwing another tack and goes into 'irons' (stalled),gets pushed backwards by the fresh wind and is unable to recover quickly.
Taking full advantage,Hypernuts passes Nomad and into the lead both now leaving Rainbow spirit wollowing in their wakes with a total lead over her of about 500m by the time she recovers.
Now it's Hypernuts,Nomad,Rainbow spirit,Casper and Finger licking good in a close duell from Rhapsody,Pie n'peas,Never surrender,Nan's girl,Jolly Roger and Speed bump.
On a squally run to the island mark,Never surrender swamp their Pacer from a broaching and decide to pull out. Meanwhile up front a bare 100m blankets the leading 4 boats, still Hypernuts,Nomad,Rainbow spirit and Casper.
On the final lap while Nomad and Hypernuts duell it out for the lead,Rainbow spirit does a screamer down wind to shoot past both to retake the lead.
As Rainbow spirit moves up to lap Nan's girl going to the island mark,Nan's girl broaches as she prepares to round.Enough distance between them to cause no interference and Rainbow spirit zooms off for the finish line as Nan's girl recovers.
Rainbow spirit has opened her lead to 600m as she crosses for another win from Nomad,Hypernuts, Casper,Rhapsody,Finger licking good,Pie n'peas,Nan's girl, Jolly Roger and Speed bump.

#148 Speed bump - as a result of our Sailabilty program, this Access Dinghy was sailed by a disabled person and his brother, and they had a ball.
They also won the race on handicap, open division !!

RACE REPORT Saturday 4.11.06

On an overcast cold day with reasonable winds and a large course set to take full advantage,Chippo held true to form as the wind dropped away right on start time, again.
At the outer starting buoy,Pie n'peas held out a windward Rainbow spirit to be away slow in 3 rd and 4 th as Jolly roger takes start honors from I'll be blowed.
Rainbow spirit broke away after 200 m to lead the fleet to the top mark up near the boatramp,Casper now in 2 nd from Pie n'peas,I'll be blowed then Rhapsody.
Peter's Pacer with Don't know away late by 3 1/2 mins and Speed hump and her disabled skipper bringing up the rear.
Rainbow spirit still out in front but only just as Pie n'peas, having passed Casper, draws almost level on the long run down the lake to the island mark.
There's a double 'sausage' across the lake with 2 wing marks setting up 2 testing working legs.To the first of these it's still Rainbow spirit with Casper now in 2 nd from Pie n'peas.
Casper is caught on port tack by a starboard Pie n'peas to take back 2 nd at the bay mark,Rhapsody now in 4 th from I'll be blowed.
Rainbow spirit picks a nice shift on the work to the gate to complete lap 1,stretching her lead with an elapsed time of 22 1/2 mins.
Pie n'peas luffs up into an outgoing tide for an agonisingly slow end to her 1 st lap with Rhapsody now up to 3 rd and a rapidly closing Casper.
Pie n'peas just makes it through to hold 2 nd,Casper claims 3 rd from Rhapsody.
The 2 nd run to the island mark has Rainbow spirit out front by 400m to Pie n'peas with Rhapsody back in 3 rd from Casper.
Peter's Pacer finally completes her 1 st lap in 37 mins from Jolly Roger close behind. The access dinghy of Speed hump is a much slower boat but they're out there enjoying themselves as rear gaurd.
Out of the island mark,Rhapsody's now ahead of Pie n'peas into 2 nd place as Rainbow spirit works across to the bay mark.
Rhapsody on her way across makes some awkward tacks in shifting winds, opening the door for Pie n,peas to slip back up to 2 nd,but managing to hold Casper behind her.
Rainbow spirit is now long gone into her 3 rd lap as Rhapsody again comes back to steal 2 nd from Pie n'peas by a boatlength through the gate with Casper still hovering.
Don't know has come out of nowhere and on opposite tack to Casper,as port boat she is forced to tack away and cross in 5 th behind her.
The wind did nothing to liven it up over the last 2 laps with the fleet now strung out and all the tactical battles over.
The newly refurbished Rhapsody managed to to take 100m out of Rainbow spirit's lead and put that behind her back to Pie n'peas,Dont' know ahead of Casper.
The finishing order after 4 laps,Rainbow spirit,Rhapsody,Pie n'peas,Don't know,Casper,I'll be blowed, Peter's Pacer,Jolly roger and Speed hump.

RACE REPORT Saturday 10.3.07

The race course was set for westerly winds but as the yachts left the beach for the starting area it had swung around to easterly.
As the 5 min countdown ticked away it was a mad gaggle of boats as all skippers set to figuring out their positioning for a now running start, resulting in a slow start for many all sqeezed up at the outer starting buoy.
Still a relatively light breeze made for a slow run to the first mark for this tightly packed bunch while the leaders skipped away in clearer air.
Boats 3 and 4 wide at the mark created a little kaos but all got round without incident. Then the SE'er kicked in,very blustery and making for tricky sailing conditions.
Nicorette found a gust and got up on 'the plane' to zoom past I'll be blowed only to lose out on approach to the bottom mark.
The first lap had Rainbow spirit leading from Hypernuts,Rhapsody and Casper, then Hectic,My yot,Bondi tram,I'll be blowed and Nicorette.
Nomad struck problems with her jib sail, falling to 10 th spot as they hurredly made repairs.
The 2 Access dinghys,Speedbump and Flying mermaid, bringing up the rear behind a couple of Pacers.
One of these,Skyblue sailing SH skipper only, capsized near the island and spent conciderable time on her side, bringing out the tender craft to assist.
Unable to assist effectively,Nicorette steered in to lend a hand if needed, her crewman going overboard and swimming to Skyblue to assist her exhausted skipper to right the boat.
Both yachts then returning to the beach and out of the race.
Flying mermaid retired with steering gear damage.
Back with the race,2 nd lap with Rainbow spirit still leading from Hypernuts and Rhapsody with Casper falling back a little, then Hectic,My yot from a fast recovering Nomad, from Bondi tram and I'll be blowed.
As they crossed to complete the 3 rd,Nomad had passed Hectic and My yot but still trailing Rhapsody and Casper with Rainbow Spirit and Hypernuts up front.
Nomad gets Casper during the the 4th then hauls in Rhapsody through the 5 th and into 3 rd place behind Hypernuts with Rainbow spirit taking the outright win.

RACE REPORT Saturday 24.3.07

10 yachts set off from Grand Flanaur beach to tackle a crossover slalom course that would ultimately yield mixed fortunes in what would be ever changing wind conditions.
With winds expecting to freshen from the North and a forecast Southerly change later in the day, anything was possible.
Jolly Roger nailed the start but was quickly overun on the first windward leg to the opposite shore mark, one of 2 over there.
The wind eased off and with these 2 marks shadowed by trees, the field quickly spread out as many found difficulty making way and rounding the marks.
Nomad jumped out to an early lead to be never challenged followed by Pie n'peas,an ever improving FLG,then Rhapsody.
Out of nowhere,a strong southerly squall blasted the fleet, providing yet another challenge and some tense moments with the course crossovers.
FLG took advantage to pass Pie n'peas, taking Rhapsody with her.
Over as quickly as it had begun, the wind eased off again, handing the advantage to Rhapsody, passing FLG into 2 nd place, then pulling out a huge lead over her.
The final downwind run was a determined fightback by Pie n'peas over FLG but around the bottom mark FLG held on to claim 3 rd.
